A squirrel's diet is not simply nuts and food that humans dump. Their meals are full of something more important including tree barks, roots, acorns, leaves and even some small insects. Some squirrels cannot break up foods like cellulose which means that they're able to ignore tree bark like a source of food altogether.

Squirrels collect food year-round, however they could be more active in their food collecting process within the fall prior to the winter. This is done like a measure to own food available in the winter if the meals are less an easy task to get. The squirrel will bury the food and come back to it after the wintertime hibernation period has ended. The food stored will often last for very long enough to maintain the squirrel until new food sources are located.
